TSA Best Management Practices for
Hay Fields

  • Dense stands
Apply Milestone™ (5 to 7 fl. oz/A) or Forefront™ (2 to 2.6 pt/A) at least 6 to 8 weeks prior to the first hay cutting when all plants are actively growing. Monitor the treated area beginning in the late summer for escaped plants and be prepared to spot-spray with either Milestone, Forefront, or Remedy™ in the fall if needed. Continue to monitor this site for 1 year and determine if additional spot-spraying is sufficient, or if the entire area should receive another broadcast application.

  • Sparse stands
Spot spray with Milestone, Forefront, or Remedy in the spring, and then monitor every 45-60 days to determine if additional spot-spraying is necessary. It may take greater than 30 days for Milestone or Forefront to control TSA; therefore, sufficient time should be allowed between spraying and hay cutting.

  • If TSA has been a significant problem in part of a pasture for many years, it is best to avoid harvesting this area. It is better to sacrifice a portion of the pasture, than to transport TSA seed.
